  • This course will survey a selection of works of Japanese literature in English translation and the films they inspired. After a brief survey of Japanese film history and a discussion of some basic approaches to film studies, we will turn our attention to the issue of adaptation. In the weeks that follow, we will focus on how the written word is transformed when adapted for the screen. This course introduces some of the major writers of 20th and 21st century fiction, and some of the most important directors in the history of Japanese cinema: Ozu, Mizoguchi, Kurosawa, and others. All film screenings will be in Japanese with English subtitles. Course grade determined by a series of short writing assignments, a midterm, and a final exam.
