    Course Description: Developing elementary level skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Mandarin Chinese in everyday communication settings. Introduction of fundamentals of pronunciation, grammar, and Chinese characters will be introduced.
  • CHN 001BL Accelerated Written Chinese I

  • Course Description: Trainings on all the communicative skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing for students who already have elementary level ability to understand or speak Mandarin Chinese. Emphases on standard Mandarin pronunciation, Chinese characters, and discourse level conversations.

  • CHN 002 Elementary Chinese

  • Course Description: Continuation of elementary level skill development in listening, speaking, reading and writing Mandarin Chinese in everyday communication settings. Continued introduction of basic vocabulary and characters as well as core grammar, and further train pronunciation.

  • CHN 111 Modern Chinese: Reading & Discussion

  • Course Description: Building on Chinese 006/003BL, further development of communication skills in Modern Standard Mandarin-speaking environments. Reading of dialogues/articles pertaining to contemporary China.

  • CHN 118 Advanced Chinese for Non-Native Speakers

  • Course Description: Chinese 118 is an Advanced Chinese for Non-Native Speakers is the course for the students who have successfully completed the third-year Mandarin Chinese series (CHN 111-113). The primary goal of this course is to help prepare students to approach a native level of Mandarin Chinese, meaning both a deeper and broader understanding of Chinese language, history, and culture. The course materials include selected authentic readings of various topics, from technology developments to social changes to popular culture in modern China. By engaging with the works of influential writers and cinematic masterpieces, students not only refine their language skills but also gain insight into the rich tapestry of China’ cultural and historical landscape, uncovering the shared human values woven into its literature and linguistic nuances and developing a versatile set of literacy skills. Specifically, the course has three focuses: The first is to enrich your language expressions through learning diverse materials from multiple sources. The second focus is to increase the correctness of both spoken and written language production and develop deeper into specialist areas of interest. The third is to prepare you to become a well-cultivated critical thinker in areas of special interest. Through employing advanced vocabulary, sentences structures, and paying attention to their grammatical accuracy, students will be able to comprehend significantly longer workers and express themselves in longer utterances, all the while using cohesive devise to enhance the coherence and fluidity of their discourse. By the end of the course, you are expected to reach a Chinese proficiency rating of solid Advanced-Low level to Advanced-Mid on a scale formulated by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

  • CHN 150 Fifth-Year Chinese: Selected Topics in Chinese Language, Literature, & Culture

  • Course Description: Examination of literary works and scholarly essays on selected topics of Chinese culture and society. Development of a deep understanding of Chinese culture and society through sophisticated Chinese speaking and writing exercises. Prerequisite(s): CHN 120; or placement exam or consent of instructor.
  • CHN 198 Hanzi Decoded: The Logic and Myth of Chinese Characters

  • Course Description: This course provides a systematic approach to mastering Hanzi by decoding the logic of their form, sound, and meaning.  We examine the script through three lenses: The Code (structural rules and composition), The Usage (handwriting, calligraphy, and digital technology), and The History (evolution from Oracle Bones to Simplification).  Students will gain the analytical skills to recognize, remember, and use characters to communicate with greater speed, accuracy, and confidence.  Taught in English.  Prerequisite(s): CHN 001; or equivalent proficiency or consent of instructor.
