Kanji Lists
Viewing the lists
The kanji lists linked below require the free Acrobat Reader for display. Windows OS users also
need to download the Japanese Font Packs for Acrobat Reader. If you have problems
displaying the lists, check to be sure you have the latest version of Acrobat Reader installed.
Nature of the Lists:
The lists below cover all the kanji introduced in foundation-level Japanese language courses at UCD (years 1 through 3). Students should consult these lists
with care, since kanji in addition to those in the textbooks are introduced in each course. Three varieties of lists are provided:
- Course New Kanji Lists - convenient, single-page tables showing the new kanji introduced in each course
- Course Kanji and Kanji Vocabulary Lists - detailed cumulative lists of all kanji students are responsible for
by the end of each course, with all required information about each kanji (meanings, readings, words used to write, etc.) provided
- Chapter Kanji and Kanji Vocabulary Lists - detailed chapter-by-chapter lists of all information to be learned for (a) new kanji introduced, (b) new information
about previously learned kanji students are now expected to know.
Course New Kanji Lists:
Kanji in these lists are arranged by stroke count; the number of kanji introduced in the course and the total number of kanji learned by the end of the course
are also given.

Course Kanji and Kanji Vocabulary Lists:
Kanji in these lists are arranged by their order number in Halpern's KANJI LEARNER'S DICTIONARY (in the column headed "KLD").
Other conventions used:
- KLD numbers marked with * are kanji added to those introduced in the textbook.
- KLD numbers marked with "c" are learned because of their importance as components in other kanji. Once words are learned that are written with one of these
kanji, the "c" designation is removed from the entry. As long as a kanji has the "c" designation, students are not be expected to read or write it on quizzes and tests.
- ON readings are written in katakana, KUN readings in hiragana (as is conventionally done in Japanese dictionaries).
- In almost all cases the "core meanings" listed are those given in KLD, but in some cases these have been revised for greater clarity. Students are responsible
for learning the meanings given in these lists (rather than the meanings given in your textbook, in other books or dictionaries, randomly chosen from the sub-headings
in KLD, or in Chinese).
- Core meanings are only English-language approximation of the meanings of the kanji. Each distinguishable English approximation is listed on a separate line;
when more than one English approximation appears on the same line (separated by a colon), it is to be understood that the words are variant attempts to indicate one
meaning for the kanji.
- The underlined portion of readings in the KUN column indicates the part of each word written in hiragana.
- All information in color is new to the course; all previously learned information is in black.
- The "kotoba" column lists all words learned for each kanji. All words appear as normally written in Japanese, with FURIGANA readings above kanji not yet learned.

Chapter Kanji and Kanji Vocabulary Lists:
Each list has two parts: the first part lists the new kanji introduced in the chapter, while the second part gives the new information learned in the chapter
for previously learned kanji. All new information in the second part is marked in color; where space allows, some previously learned words are given in black. In
addition to the conventions used in the Course Kanji and Kanji Vocabulary Lists above, the lists for JPN 2-6 also indicate in the "kotoba" column which chapters
covered in the course have new information for a kanji.
