JPN 6
Prerequisites:
JPN 6 is for students who completed JPN 6 at UCD with a
grade of C- or better; others can enroll with permission of the instructor
based on the student's placement test performance.
Objectives:
You learn to speak with politeness and modesty in formal situations, such as when speaking with teachers, work supervisors, and those older than
yourself. Students also learn to present opinions either in agreement or disagreement with others, to express their displeasure with actions and
situations, and to apologize for offending behavior. In JPN 6 you will regulary read short essays and practice discussing the
essay contents in class. Lists of kanji learned chapter-by-chapter in the course textbook (NAKAMA, vol. 2), as well as a cumulative list of all kanji
learned by the end of JPN 6, are available for download from the Kanji lists page. Skills learned, keyed to chapters in the course textbook, include being
able to:
Chapter 8: Talking about Employment
- Recognize when to speak "honorifically" about others and "humbly" about yourself
- Talk about favors done for you and favors you do for others
- Get others to let you do something
- Express regrets over actions that cannot be reversed
- Describe your background, qualifications, and aspirations to a job interviewer
- Read and write resumes in the accepted Japanese format
Chapter 9: Complaints
- Express displeasure about things you are made to do in class, at a part-time job, by roommates, in childhood, etc.
- Talk about annoying things that have been done to you and misfortunes that have happened to you
- Talk about efforts you are making to improve your grades, health, friendships, etc.
- Apologize for causing problems for others
- Read and write about causing problems for others and what can be done to avoid them
Chapter 10: The Environment and Society
- Talk about personal experience with natural disasters and accidents
- Present your opinions about social and environmental problems
- Express agreement and disagreement with the opinions of others
- Recognize the formal written style used in essays, books, etc. (but not formal personal letters)
- Read and write about environmental issues (such as pollution and garbage collection) and social issues (such as crime)
