JPN 5
Prerequisites:
JPN 5 is for students who completed JPN 4 at UCD with a grade of C- or better; others can enroll with permission of the instructor, based on the student's placement test performance.
Objectives:
The main objective of the course is to extend your ability to communicate effectively and appropriately in various real-life situations and also to read and write about these situations. Topics include, taking care of business in post offices and banks, making plans and preparations for future activities, asking and giving directions, and giving and receiving gifts. Lists of new kanji information learned chapter-by-chapter with the course textbook, as well as a cumulative list of all kanji learned by the end of JPN 5, are available for download from the Kanji lists page.
Spoken and written skills learned, keyed to chapters in the textbook, include being able to:
Chapter 4: Rules
- Talk about expected behavior at home when you were growing up
- Describe acceptable behavior at your dorm or apartment and any rules in effect there
- Discuss what you have to do to open a bank account in Japan and other countries
- Talk with postal clerks about things you want to mail
- Change the topic of conversation in appropriate ways
- Read deposit forms used in Japanese banks
- Read and write about privacy expectations in Japan and other countries
Chapter 5: My Future, Making Preparations
- Exchange opinions and information about personal plans for employment, marriage, etc.
- Offer advice to others about their personal plans
- Talk about preparations made or to be made for future schooling and employment
- Organize group preparations for an upcoming event
- Make confirmations and check comprehension effectively in conversation
- Read and write about marriage customs and your plans for marriage
Chapter 6: Asking for and Giving directions
- Give a new friend directions from school to your dorm room/apartment
- Give directions to the bookstore, library, and other locations around campus
- Approach a stranger and ask directions to places in Davis
- Negotiate the Tokyo train and subway system
- Read and write about getting around Tokyo
Chapter 7: Gifts
- Talk about gift-giving among the Japanese
- Present and accept gifts in culturally appropriate ways
- Get help from friends and store clerks choosing appropriate gifts
- Read and write about gift-exchange etiquette in Japan and the US
