JPN 2
Prerequisites:
JPN 2 is designed for students who completed JPN 1 at UC Davis with a grade of C- or better; others can enroll with permission of the instructor, based on the
student's placement test results. NOTE: This page is out-of-date for 2009-2010 because a new
textbook will be used. The new textbook is listed in the COURSE
MATERIALS section below. Other information on this page will be revised
shortly.
Objectives:
You will learn to offer invitations, to shop and dine out in Japan, and to talk and write (using both kana and kanji)
about memorable past activities and hobbies. Lists of new kanji information learned chapter-by-chapter with the course textbook, as well as a cumulative list of all kanji learned by the end of JPN 2, are available for download from the Kanji Lists page. Spoken and written skills learned, keyed to chapters in the textbook, include being able to:
Chapter 6: Daily Routine
- Talk about what you and classmates did in the past during weekends, holidays, in high school, etc.
- Indicate how long and how frequently you and your classmates do common activities
- Indicate reasons why things are the way they are and why you and classmates do certain things
- Talk about similarities and differences in people's daily routines
- Read and write about student daily life
Chapter 7: Activities and Hobbies
- Talk about things and activities you like and dislike
- Give reasons for your likes and dislikes
- Indicate preferences by comparing one thing or place with another
- Read and write about making plans for a trip and other activities involving preferences
Chapter 8: Shopping
- Ask a store clerk for assistance in buying things of your choice (color, size, price, etc)
- Count different types of things, including floors of a building
- Read and write about prices and quantities of different types of things
Chapter 9: Restaurants and Invitations
- Make a phone call and offer invitations, giving information (e.g., time and place) about an event
- Talk about going places for specific purposes
- Accept and decline invitations in appropriate ways
- Order and make other requests at a restaurant
- Read and write postcards that include numbers and dates
