Descriptions

In the first-year sequence, students learn to handle predictable daily-life situations when shopping and eating out, etc., and to use simple sentences to talk about school life, home life, friends, family and oneself. Students also learn hiragana, katakana, and about 110 kanji. A list of all foundation-level kanji is available at First year kanji list [pdf]. The primary textbook is Nakama Volume 1. Descriptions of courses are available at: JPN 1, JPN 2, and JPN 3.

In the second-year sequence, students learn to handle more daily-life situations (e.g., planning trips, giving directions, gift exchanges, and voicing complaints) and to use more complex sentences to talk about the weather, job searches, and social and environment problems. Students also learn conventions of male and female speech and how to speak appropriately in formal and informal situations. Students learn an additional 370 kanji. The primary textbook is Nakama Volume 2. A list of all foundation-level kanji is available at Second year kanji list [pdf]. Descriptions of courses are available at: JPN 4, JPN 5 and JPN 6.

In the third-year sequence, students learn to present information and opinions in logically connected, coherent ways. They also learn how to retell series of connected events and to explain how individual events are related. Students do extensive reading about Japanese customs and social arrangements, and learn to think and talk critically about this information. Written styles needed for different purposes and audiences are studied and practiced. Students learn additional 540 kanji. The primary textbook is Intermediate Japanese. A list of all foundation-level kanji is available at Third year kanji list [pdf]. Descriptions of courses are available at: JPN 111, JPN 112, and JPN 113.

Policies

Attendance: Students are expected to attend class everyday. In addition, you are responsible for any announcements made or information presented in class. Be in touch with classmates to find out what was covered in any class you miss. Needless to say, class attendance has great impact on your overall course performance.

Absence & Make-ups: If you miss more than three classes, 0.5% will be deducted from your final course grade for each absence starting with the fourth in JPN 1-6 courses, and 1% in JPN 111-113 courses. Tests and quizzes missed because of tardiness or unexcused absence CANNOT be made up. However, students who miss a quiz or test because of unavoidable circumstances (such as serious illness, family emergency, or job interview) should consult with the instructor as soon as possible after the event becomes known. A make-up quiz may be granted in such cases, with appropriate written confirmation from a doctor, etc. This policy does not apply to routine vocabulary and kanji quizzes since the lowest scores are thrown out before calculating total quiz average.

Tardiness: Missing part of a class may also result in missing a quiz or being counted absent. Quizzes missed because of tardiness cannot be taken at a later time.

Assignments: Turn in your homework assignments at the beginning of class, not during class or at the end. Working on homework during class will very negatively affect your weekly class participation grade. To receive full credit, assignments must be turned in on the due date; homework turned in later receives no credit.
