Japanese Language Program

Welcome to the Japanese Language Program in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, University of California, Davis.

Program Goals

The goal of the program is to develop your ability to use the Japanese language accurately and appropriately. Students will learn to use the language for speaking, listening, reading and writing while developing an understanding of Japanese culture. Our emphasis is on real-life, active use of the Japanese language to communicate effectively and in culturally appropriate ways.

Sequences of Courses

The foundation-level Japanese language program at UC Davis offers three years of study (JPN 1 through JPN 113). Successful completion of this sequence, or the equivalent proficiency, qualifies students for any of the non-sequential fourth-year Japanese courses offered (JPN 131 through JPN 136). Each foundation-level course is offered once a year.

Fall Quarter Winter Quarter Spring Quarter
JPN 1 JPN 2 JPN 3
JPN 4 JPN 5 JPN 6

For section times and places of these courses and the availability of the fourth-year courses in any one quarter, check the registrar's current quarter page.

The first-year sequence (JPN 1 - 3) is also offered as an intensive summer session course (JPN 1A). Students can also study intensively in Japan during spring quarter to complete JPN 3 through JPN 6 (in JPN 7S) or to complete JPN 6 through JPN 113 (in JPN 117S).

See Course Overview to find goals of each level, course materials, and policies.

See the following pages for study suggestions for summer and after completing JPN 113:

Placement

Students who have not previously taken Japanese at UCD but have prior experience or study of Japanese elsewhere (including at home), must take the Japanese Placement Test before enrollment in the appropriate course can be approved. See the Placement Test page for details.

Tutoring

Tutors are available in 324 Sproul. Check this quarter's tutor schedule for their availability. We accept applications for Japanese language tutors (native speakers and proficient non-native speakers) each quarter. Please see Tutors to find more details.
